Grants

SOPHIA is presently seeking support from a number of sources, but it also has some funds to offer for select purposes. Here is some information about funds that SOPHIA has sought and been awarded, followed by some initial information about funds that SOPHIA can provide to its members and interested parties.

Awards to SOPHIA

2010 / 2011

Photo of tree growing from acorn to symbolize seed funds. The Society of Philosophers in America (SOPHIA) sponsored the events listed on our events page. In 2010, we were awarded two grants to support events in 2011.

The first was from the American Philosophical Association's Grant Fund, which awarded SOPHIA $4,000 to support two events in 2011.

We were also awarded a grant for $5,000 from the Mississippi Humanities Council for our first event in 2011. The MHC has generously funded our events in the past as well.

Finally, we are developing programs for which we will seek support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

2009

Photo of a hand writing "Thank you."We are grateful for the generous support of several institutions that have awarded us grants for events in 2009.

First, the American Philosophical Association has generously selected SOPHIA to be an APA Grant Fund award recipient, sponsoring our three workshops held in 2009 at the level of $2,400.

Second, we are grateful to the Mississippi Humanities Council for their support for our first 2009 workshop, "Ethics at the End of Life," which were both held in Oxford, MS, for which they provided approximately $2,000.

SOPHIA also has the great support of a number of universities that will be hosting our workshops and that support our members. Among them are the University of Oregon, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, The University of Mississippi, and more.

Awards that SOPHIA Can Offer

At present, SOPHIA has one form of funding to offer and the potential for another. First, when we can we offer some support for traveling to our symposia, especially for philosophers who come from institutions with limited travel support. The idea here is that we want to have participation from scholars who often are unable to participate in unique events like SOPHIA's symposia. The second form of support is in development. It is SOPHIA's intention to support events that feature either a SOPHIA-style conversational session or that are full-scale SOPHIA symposia. While these funds will start off small, the purpose is to be supportive and encouraging, while also offering seed funds that demonstrate professional support for event organizers who can then apply for further funding, such as from state humanities councils or from university sources. We will post more information on this latter source as it solidifies as a possibility. For now, if you are interested, contact the Executive Director Dr. Eric Thomas Weber (etweber@olemiss.edu) with any questions.

In some cases we are able to support some travel costs and hotel stay for participants in our symposia. In general, we try to involve local communities as much as we can in order to reach out to our fellow citizens surrounding universities and colleges, but we also recognize that philosophers come from all over the country and may find a splendid event to attend with us. You can email Executive Director Dr. Eric Thomas Weber (etweber@olemiss.edu) with any questions.
